The teamArchie Clipper 2023-24 Race Bursary

teamArchie are very excited to announce that they will be offering a bursary for a young person (age 18-24) to take part in Leg 1 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race starting in August 2023. The Atlantic crossing from the UK to South America covers over 7000 nautical miles in around 33 days under race conditions.

You will be following in the sea boots of teamArchie’s first Clipper Race bursary recipient, Callum. He set sail from London to Uruguay in September on board the yacht Zhuhai. He recalled how, as he stepped ashore in Punte del Este, he was greeted personally by Clipper Race founder and sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston:

“I couldn't believe that I'd had the opportunity to meet him as he has been one of my role models for quite some time. I remember shaking his hand and saying “Sir Robin, that was the most exhilarating experience of my entire life”. “

Callum now works full time for CatZero, the charity which first introduced him to sailing when he was struggling with drug addiction and homelessness. He will be taking his Yachtmaster qualifications in August. His long term ambition is to sail all the way around the world with the Clipper Race as a Skipper. You can read more about Callum’s voyage here: https://www.teamarchie.org/news/2020/8/20/a-letter-from-callum

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is a unique 40,000 nautical mile race between a fleet of identical 70’ racing yachts. The race was the brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail single handed non-stop around the globe. He wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience the challenge and sheer exhilaration of ocean racing.
The race yachts are skippered by professionals allowing them to be crewed by amateur and often inexperienced sailors of all ages, from all backgrounds and from all around the world. As a crew member you will be trained as an ocean racer, working as a team to be a self-sufficient unit capable of taking care of any situation, no matter what the conditions. Over the course of the voyage you will have the opportunity to fulfil many roles on board from grinder to helm. You will become an accomplished ocean racer but, more importantly, you will learn a huge amount about yourself, about teamwork, leadership, mental and physical endurance. You will learn new skills, make enduring friendships, and witness Mother Nature at her most beautiful and most extreme.
