Clipper

The teamArchie Clipper Race Bursary is funding training and participation for one young person on Leg 1 of the 2023/24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The Clipper Race is just the sort of challenge that Archie would have relished. It requires determination, stamina and the ability to work as a team under extreme conditions. This incredible bursary has been made possible by the fundraising efforts of John Olsen who undertook the challenge of two legs of the Clipper Race in 2017.

For the Clipper Race Bursary we were looking to find a candidate for whom the race wouldn’t simply deliver a one-off adventure, but would be a significant stepping stone for them towards a career in sailing or other outdoor pursuits. It is important that the award winner should be someone who would be willing to learn and hopefully share their experiences to inspire others and ultimately mentor other bursary recipients in the future.

Our first bursary was awarded to Callum Leach from Hull.

“Out of a strong field of applicants, Callum Leach was the stand-out candidate. Through his involvement with CatZero’s sailing-based programmes in Hull, he has shown a real determination to turn his life around - going from participating very reluctantly just to keeping his support workers happy, to being a regular volunteer, and now to being a key member of the CatZero team. We know that Callum’s attitude and personality will add a lot to his crew on his selected yacht Zhuhai and we’re very excited to see and hear what he takes out of it himself.”
